On the evening of the 6th of March 2026 at 20:00 – 22:00 we’ll be running a two hour “have-a-go” longsword session for women everywhere. This event is operated on a donation basis, pay whatever you like when you book and 100% of all takings will be donated to Solace Women’s Aid.
The session will take place at our regular venue on Escrick Street in York, click here for more information. We would recommend arriving 5-10 minutes before the advertised start time.
You will be taught by Claire Maries, an experienced YSD instructor who has been with the club for six years and who has instructed at events up and down the UK. All equipment that you will need is provided.
This class will run you through the basics of the longsword, the most iconic of medieval and early-renaissance weapons. You’ll learn how to hold the sword properly, how to cut, stab, and (more importantly) defend yourself, as well as dipping your toes into some of the more advanced techniques that we study from time-to-time at the York School of Defence. You don’t need to be in shape, and the class is open to anyone regardless of experience. Beginners are not only most welcome but are actively encouraged! The more the merrier!

One of the wonderful things about what we do (usually referred to as “HEMA” or “Historical European Martial Arts”) is that all of our training is taken straight from period manuals. In this session you will learn a mix of English, German and Italian longsword principles and techniques from the 15th and 16th centuries, and hopefully leave with an appreciation of how versatile a weapon the longsword can be. HEMA is a rapidly growing pastime around the world and it’s a great way to meet new people and learn something fun whilst doing a bit of physical movement. History was never this interesting at school, and you’ll also be fully prepared for the zombie apocalypse.
If you’d like to book please go ahead and complete the form below. Once you click “submit” wait a moment for the form to refresh, it should then allow you to make your donation via PayPal. Once we’ve recevied your form and donation we’ll be in touch directly to confirm your booking.
